Learning Difficulties

An assessment for learning difficulties can be helpful if your child is struggling in the school environment.

Psychoeducational Assessment

A Psychoeducational Assessment may be suited if you are querying a Specific Learning Disorder such as, dyslexia (reading), dysgraphia (writing), or dyscalculia (math). A Psychoeducational Assessment can also help parents and teachers to better understand why a child may be experiencing academic challenges and can help guide educational strategies.

A Psychoeducational Assessment is conducted by a qualified Psychologist and includes:

  • An Intake Session
  • IQ/Cognitive Testing
  • Achievement Testing (e.g. literacy, numeracy, writing)
  • Social/Emotional/Behavioural Assessment
  • A comprehensive report
  • A 45-minute Report Unpacking session

Important Notes:

  • Occasionally it may be necessary for additional assessments to be administered depending on the outcome of initial testing (e.g. an Adaptive Behaviour assessment may be used to screen for an Intellectual Disability depending on the results of the cognitive testing; and Attention Screener may be used to screen for ADHD).
  • In order to complete a dyslexia diagnosis, we would also require an up-to-date oral language assessment. If you do not have a recent report, our speech pathologist will complete an oral language assessment as part of this process.
  • Additional testing items are an additional cost and your assessor will seek your permission before they are administered.

Academic Screening

An Academic Screening Assessment is an introductory assessment and will not provide a diagnosis. This assessment is recommended for students in early primary years (e.g. Prep – Gr2) who have not received targeted intervention.

An Academic Screening Assessment is an introductory assessment conducted by a qualified Psychologist and Speech Pathologist, and includes:

  • An Intake Session
  • Achievement Testing (e.g. literacy, numeracy, phonological awareness)
  • Dyslexia Screening
  • Language Testing
  • Social/Emotional/Behavioural Assessment
  • A comprehensive report
  • A 45-minute Report Unpacking session

Important Note: Depending on the results of the assessment, our clinician/s may recommend that your child undergo additional assessment after a period of intensive intervention to assess the outcome of the intervention and determine if a learning disorder is present.
